Twitter channel @Scotland has launched today, 21 July, with the aim to promote events including the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, the Glasgow Comedy Festival and the Loch Ness Marathon.

Launching the same week as the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games are about to begin, the channel will promote Scotland’s culture and personality through the sharing of event listings, behind the scenes build-up to events and reportage from participation events.

Lewis Wiltshire, director of media partnerships at Twitter UK, said of the account: "2014 is a hugely significant year for Scotland, and the @Scotland Twitter account will deliver a new and unique perspective of the country through the eyes of its people.

"From major sporting events to stunning landscapes, @Scotland's curators will use Twitter to bring the nation to life for followers across the world, 140 characters at a time."

@Scotland will support the promotion of events both funded and non-funded by the Scottish Government and partners, but will not be used for political messages.

John Booth, head of marketing and corporate communications at The Scottish Government said: “The purpose of the @Scotland account is to give a flavour of what’s going on in Scotland in real time, to position Scotland as a great place to live, work, study and visit. We hope to engage a community of both those hosting events and those likely to attending from around the world. Launching now, just as the Games begin, we hope to gain momentum ready for the Festivals, Ryder Cup and the plethora of small events happening in Scotland this year.”

At time of writing, the account had 118 followers.
